Reece had a great first race

The 2015 racing season has well and truly begun, a very successful first round gave the team much excitement leading into round 2. The weekend was a tale of two stories for both Reece & Curtis.   They hadn’t sat on the bikes since they finished their final races at brands hatch over 5 weeks ago, so it was going to take a bit of getting into before they start started to get the lap times. During practice Reece quickly regained his form that he had at Brands and with a few minor changes he was on his way to another great weekend. Curtis’s practice was however very different. Mechanical problems meant he had to miss out the majority of practice only managing a handful of laps on a bike which was far from perfect. The team worked day and night to find the source of the electrical problem, and in the early hours of the morning, just 6 hours before qualifying, they had managed to cure the issue. The bikes where ready for race day!

The weekend was already turning out to be quite complicated for the team and the weather wasn’t going to make it any easier. Howling winds and ice cold rain during the night completely changed the team’s plans going into qualifying. Reece was out qualifying first, the rain had stopped and the sun was shining and the track was surprisingly drying very fast. Having only 15 minutes to qualify meant that we had to ensure the correct tyre choice was made as there wouldn’t be time to change tyres mid-session. The team made the decision to run out on wet compound tyres and hope that the track was still damp enough. Upon Reece’s out lap he quickly realised they had made the wrong decision and the track would have supported dry tyres. This was a disaster for the team and Reece’s qualifying but surprisingly he managed to get in one good lap to put him 9th on the grid; a good result considering the circumstances.

Reece gets ready for his first session of the day

Curtis’ qualifying was again ruined by electrical problems; this time a different electrical problem effecting the fuelling of his Gibfield Garage Suzuki GSXR 1000. The issue was easily fixable but not before the end of his 15 minute qualifying. After only 3 laps he had to pull in leaving him 24th on the grid for race 1.

Race 1 brought back success for Reece, after a hard fought battle he came home 3rd in the Formula 600 Race. This was a great result considering the difficulties in qualifying as well as suffering from the surprising oncome of fore-arm pump, a condition that affects most riders leading to fore-arm cramp whilst riding. Reece nursed his bike home to a great result for the team! Curtis’s Race 1 was finally on-board a fully functioning GSXR 1000, he battled hard for the entire 14 laps bringing home the bike in 8th position in the GP1 Class. The team was delighted with the results considering the difficulties that they had faced during the weekend so far. Everyone was looking forward to a great 2nd day at round 2, Donington Park.

Preparing for race day

A few changes to the set-up of Reece’s bike had clearly worked; he was fastest in warm up with his confidence sky high for the first race of Sunday. Reece got off to a great start however after contact with another rider on lap 1, he was knocked back town to 12th and had a lot of work to do. The race was hard and fast with Reece eventually climbing his way back on to the podium with another 3rd position. Curtis’s main aim for race 1 on Sunday was to have a solid finish and to get more laps under his belt. He did this in fine fashion finishing 8th in the GP1 Class with a best lap of 1:13.539.

The final race of the weekend should have been relatively straight forward. The team had make good progress all weekend and had achieved some much needed championship points. Then the rain came. It was fierce and heavy all afternoon and was sure to make the final race of the weekend very interesting. Reece was first out in the Formula 600 final race and having not raced in the rain for over 18 months his main aim was to ride steady and bring the bike home the right way up. The race was manic, a third of the grid had fallen off by the end of the first lap including Reece’s closest rival in the championship. Reece rode with his mind bringing the bike home in a safe and steady 6th place overall and 2nd in the Formula 600 Class. This also meant that Reece was now leading the Formula 600 Championship by 11 Points.  Curtis’ run of bad luck continued into the final race of the weekend. Just one lap from the end Curtis slid off his Suzuki GSXR1000. The bike wasn’t damaged, only his progress in the 2015 Thundersport GP1 Championship.

Team newcomer, Dean Court, had a great first weekend on board his Suzuki GSXR600. This was Deans first weekend on a 600 cc motorcycle having ridden an Aprilia RRV450 for 3 seasons. Dean started the weekend with consistency and mileage in mind as these where the two things needed to learn the craft of racing 600 cc Supersport machines. He rode well all weekend bringing his lap times into the low 1:15’s, a great result for his first time riding his GSXR 600.

A weekend of two halves sums up this round for team PRF Racing. Reece now leads the Formula 600 Championship going into round 3. Curtis having had many mechanical issues managed some very good results and but for a small mistake in his final race, would have had a DNF free weekend. We look forward to see you at the 3rd round of the championship, Snetterton. See you there!

after all.

A hard come podium for Reece
